FAQs

Yes, but the landscape has changed significantly since 2021. Here’s what’s currently available:

Municipal Rebates:

  • Banff: $750/kW (up to $15,000) – the most generous in Alberta
  • Edmonton: $0.50/watt for multi-unit properties only (4+ units)
  • Medicine Hat: $200/kW (up to $1,000)
  • Wetaskiwin & Canmore: Limited grants available

Federal Programs:

  • The Canada Greener Homes Grant and Loan have ended
  • Businesses can claim 30% Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit through 2034
  • Business tax write-off: 100% deduction (75% year one, 50% declining balance)

Financing:

  • CEIP (Clean Energy Improvement Program): Available in 20+ municipalities including Edmonton and Calgary. Finance through your property tax bill at 1.2-3.6% interest over up to 20 years.
  • Net Metering: Province-wide program lets you earn credits for excess energy exported to the grid
  • Bank financing: RBC, TD, and Scotiabank offer solar-specific loans
  • Installer financing: Many installers (including SolarNinjas) offer 0% financing options

Bottom line: While single-family residential rebates have decreased, solar is still affordable through CEIP financing, net metering, and business incentives. Programs are limited and may be phased out as adoption increases.

Conditions for Solar electricity generating in Alberta range somewhere between very good and stunningly excellent. Alberta is nearly twice the size of Germany (current world leader and example of Solar excellence) and we also have nearly twice the solar energy being shone upon us every day for every square inch of land. Yet they have 18,000 times more solar power installed than we do. See that slightly darker orange zone around the north saskatchewan river? We’re right in the middle of that solar gold mine.

AB vs Germany

We have always relied on scientific data from the federal government to carefully calculate solar exposure, measure it and then design off that. However what we now know is that the entire area is so rich in solar resource that it almost doesn’t matter! We are bathed in sunlight all winter, and the cold temperatures make up for the shorter days. (Solar Panels work better in the cold due to higher efficiency, less heat generated).

Additionally to the days of sun we get, we have a lot of available land overall. We have an overabundance of roofspace facing east south and west which is perfect for solar and we lack serious shading issues in most areas because we are wide open spaces without a lot of crazy hills and small mountains.

Solar works well enough on our cloudy days that year on year we get enough power from the sun that if we wanted to we could power Germany directly.

Bottom line, in the Edmonton area (and in most of the province) if you can face solar panels anywhere from East all the way around to south or West you have good reason to be generating your own power.

If you have to sell, it should bring the homeowner comfort that their home will list as a revenue-generating property, that with solar the electric bill is controlled or eliminated, and that they are on the leading edge of high value based sales metrics which attract more motivated buyers.

Longer-term studies are now showing that homeowners recoup their investment (sometimes slightly less or more) when installing PV systems. Photovoltaics can be a practical home investment, not just a green statement.

Study: Home Owned PV Improves Resale Value

Homes sell up to twice as fast, for more $$. -NYT, Forbes, NREL, Studies & Articles

More and more people are seeing these photovoltaic systems as attractive, and a value added to any property. They are low to no maintenance, generate a steady return indefinitely, encourage a sense of independence, and make a strong positive statement.

More affluent, educated, motivated buyers are interested in these things and so homes can sell much faster additionally to being worth more to begin with.

Any unused or underused land could be a candidate for a solar PV installation. They make a good wind diffuser along edges of property much like planted trees. They generate energy (and that equals money), which is nice to know every time you look at them.

The operating costs of a rural property are reduced, which is an incentive to buyers. It’s not just urban folks who are keen to cash in on the direction the market is going.

Farmers and large property owners stand to make a great deal back on their investment as solar scales up quickly. Doubling the size of a PV system does not necessarily double its cost, leading to a condition similar to buying in bulk. The more you install, the greater your rate of return and the greater the value of your asset overall.

Solar is an asset that does not depreciate the way a bathroom renovation or new car does.  25-year warranties and lifespans of solar technology far exceeding that help retain value and every time energy prices rise so does the value of your installation.

It’s a new way of thinking but, in terms of value, the more energy costs the more your solar asset is worth. If you can generate all of your power or more with solar that is a serious net benefit. If you can’t generate all your power from the sun, it will still insulate you from future cost increases and save a lot of money while improving your cash flow.

Your service will be outfitted with a bi-directional meter and tracked every second of the day. The government regulates what you will get paid at a minimum of market value, and more incentives are being released that can increase your payback. You will also be able to monitor your site performance using various apps, and the equipment we install.

Many electric retailers offer programs to sell green energy at higher rates and can offer you incentives for signing up with them. As a solar producer you become a superhero in Alberta’s energy market!

Your payment will come on your electric bill as a credit, or as a quarterly cheque.  There are several arrangements in place that customers use to get paid.

How much of course depends on the size of your system. Fill that roof! Electricity rates vary wildly during the year but over time, we all know the only direction they’re going and that is UP.

What if your’s was free essentially forever, and anything you generated was paid for?

We love to say “fill the roof, it’s not doing anything anyways!” but if you’re looking to hit zero dollars (including paying any connection fees with solar energy), it will depend on a few things:

  • How efficient your home usage is. (LED Lights, Efficient appliances, limited bad habits with leaving things on, how many people in the house.)
  • How great your site is. (Which way do your roof surfaces face? Are there trees to shade them? How much roof space is available?)
  • Do you have anything unusual with electric power such as welding machines, multiple dryers or ovens, electric heaters in the house/garage?
  • Several other factors…

Regardless of conditions, we are generally able to adapt. We will calculate your needs and develop a system tailored to you if elimination of that evil electric bill is your goal. There is a huge assortment of equipment available to help.

Many people do not know this but, solar panels work BETTER in winter! The cold helps the efficiency of the panel even outperform its maximum specifications by up to 25%.
We get a lot of cold, clear, sunny days here in the winter.. with the sun at a nice low angle. We simply plan for that with our install designs. Fewer hours per day at a higher efficiency means solar energy is great here in Alberta all winter!

During the summer we get long days. Facing east, west or south is no problem for our latitude.

Solar panels even work on cloudy days, albeit at a reduced rate.
Light snow melts off them quickly as well… and the panels will still generate power when the light passes through the snow to the panel. So don’t worry, you won’t be running to the roof with a snow brush like you do for the car in the morning.

Most contractors disappear after the sale. We don't.
